At a meeting of the Skegness Conservative Men’s Branch Committee held on Monday March 1, 1965, the chairman, Cllr Dr David Pendrigh, stated that if members thought that the time had come to sponsor and support candidates as Conservatives, then Independent Conservative candidates must accept the Conservative label. Cllr Denys Hudson commented that the sooner candidates showed their true colours the better. Cllr L Dickman said great care would be needed in the selection of a candidate. He added that “it would need to be someone well known to the electorate as there was a strong socialist element in the estates in North Ward which was not the case in the South”.
