In January 1968 the Skegness Conservative Men’s Supper Club held a debate on the subject “Can the Conservative Party afford Enoch Powell?”. At the February committee meeting of the Men’s Branch the supper club convenor, Mr Alan Archer, said that he had sent the press report on the debate to Mr Powell, who had replied saying that he hoped to visit the Horncastle Division later in the year. It was hoped to have Mr Powell as the guest speaker at the Annual Supper “and endeavours in this direction were already in hand”.
