At the Divisional Executive Council AGM in May, 1977, the following motion had been put and narrowly defeated: “This Association, whilst acknowledging the magnificent work of the police force in maintaining law and order, views with regret an increasing loss of mutual respect between the community and the police, and, believing that this view is widely held and judging it to be the result of unnecessary and sometimes discourteous police action against the motorist, respectfully asks the Member of Parliament to take the matter up with the appropriate Government department.” Cllr Ernest Saunders told the Skegness Conservative Men’s Branch later that, although defeated, the motion may have led to a little improvement in relations between the police and the public in Skegness. He felt some of the police’s over-zealousness may have gone and therefore a little good had been done
